Nottingham Patchwork Group was formed in March 1980 after a series of articles by Daphne Oxland on the Woman’s page of the Nottingham Evening Post. Interested readers were invited to attend a meeting in the Evening Post’s head office in Forman Street. Over forty ladies attended and NPG was formed.

The group grew rapidly, with 81 members a year later, and quickly started holding workshops and regular meetings. In October 1982 the group organised the first of many exhibitions that time raising money for the New Born Intensive care unit at the City hospital. Often at exhibitions the group would make a quilt in a day which would also be used to raise money for charity.

When changes were afoot at the Evening Post, the group moved to the Mechanics building in Trinity Square. When redevelopment was started in Trinity Square the Mechanics moved to a new building nearby on North Sherwood Street. Here, after a while, parking became a problem and membership dropped considerably as people weren’t keen on coming into town at night. A vote was taken and we decided to meet for a whole day at Harrow Road Community Centre where we had previously held workshops, which has proved to be very successful.
